A new venue, tattoo professionals from all over the world, and an expanded lifestyle exhibition were on offer to curious visitors at this year's annual tattoo convention in Cape Town, South Africa.

Ink, Art, And Accessories At The 5th Cape Town International Tattoo Convention - PosterThis year the 5th Cape Town International Tattoo Convention was held at Cape Town City Hall, which is a much more atmospheric, interesting, and historic location in the middle of the city than the previous venue, The Pavilion at the V&A Waterfront, where it was held in 2011 and 2012.

This year's mix of convention exhibitors comprised a much wider, and bigger, mix of lifestyle products intermingled with the tattoo artists, who were from all over the world. I thought it really added much more value to the event, as people not particularly interested in getting a tattoo on the day could research artists they like, if they felt so inclined, as well as buy lifestyle products that ranged from Rockabilly and pin-up clothing to vinyl toys, natural history artifacts, wire art, and jewellery. Many of the artists stayed in the city for a few days after the convention, filling guest spots at local tattoo parlours, which gave fans more of a chance to get a tattoo from a favourite artist without the pressure of the convention's hours possibly restricting some of the work that could be done.

At the convention there was also a small exhibition of Levi's vintage clothing, burlesque revues, music nights held in the evenings, and the Homeward Bound art exhibition, which we have already showcased.

The official convention poster, depicted here, as well as the Homeward Bound poster and the music festival poster were all designed by Simon Berndt of One Horse Town. You can see his gallery of the work on his web site.

Ink, Art, And Accessories At The 5th Cape Town International Tattoo Convention - art by Derek Baker

We've written about Cape Town tattoo artist Derek Baker a few times on this site (and you can read the Homeward Bound article to see the artwork he submitted for the exhibition's wine-label project). He spent the Friday and Saturday of the convention working on two huge pieces - pictured above is one of them - so I wasn't able to snap him in action on the Sunday, when I attended, as he decided to spend the day checking out the convention rather than working on another piece.

Ink, Art, And Accessories At The 5th Cape Town International Tattoo Convention - Kari from Memento Tattoo

While I was documenting Rich Mulholland getting part two of a tattoo by Derek Baker (see above) Wayne Morris, a local with extensive tattoo art over much of his body, stopped by the store (you can see him briefly in the video that forms part of that article). He collects tattoos by tattoo artists from all over the world and in doing so is becoming a work of art himself. At this year's convention he had Kari, a dot-work specialist from Memento Tattoo in Oslo, Norway, work on a piece on his leg.

What was particularly interesting and unusual was that the work Kari did on Wayne's leg was predominantly in pink, a colour not often seen in tattoo designs.

Ink, Art, And Accessories At The 5th Cape Town International Tattoo Convention - Bully from Redneck Tattoo

You can see the Homeward Bound wine label art by Bully from Redneck Tattoo in Lillehammer, Norway, above. On the Sunday at the convention he worked on a skull tattoo. It must have hurt immensely but the guy seemed to be in some sort of Zen place. You can view a gallery of Bully's work at the Redneck Tattoo Facebook page, including a very interesting cover up.

Ink, Art, And Accessories At The 5th Cape Town International Tattoo Convention - Cape Town Rollergirls

Cape Town has a burgeoning women's flat-track roller-derby league that practises at the Sunningdale Sports Complex and some of its members exhibited at the tattoo convention to raise awareness and meet the public. I had a good chat with a few of the athletes and am keen to seem in action at a future open night, which the league occasionally hosts to enable the public to learn more about the sport (which is not this) and become a supporter or even join the league.

The next open night is likely to be in May so if you missed the February one keep an eye on the league's Facebook page for the official announcement, as well as the Iron Meisies' team page, for more information.

I loved the mix at this year's convention and it was great to see familiar faces as well as new exhibitors. The expanded lifestyle section, notably featuring more quirky local businesses with very interesting wares, was great and offered something extra for people who want to see more than just tattoo artists working meticulously on a complicated piece for hours at a time, as fascinating as that is if you have the time to follow it through.

The new venue, unfortunately, still split exhibitors and artists up via a maze of interconnected rooms and therefore, while I think it was a better venue than The Pavilion, which sometimes feels a bit sterile and functional, I'm not convinced that it was the best venue.

I also really loved that another themed art exhibition, featuring work by many artists participating in the convention, was organised as part of the festivities, as it expanded the concept of art beyond something that is just inked into skin and gave visitors greater awareness of the skill of some of the tattoo artists they could then meet nearby. I think the art exhibition has become my favourite event on the annual programme, so I'm particularly looking forward to what is produced next year.
