Now an annual Halloween tradition in its fourth year, the 2013 Cape Town Zombie Walk gathered the likeminded soulless from all over the city who shuffled and moaned their way through some of the most picturesque parts of Cape Town.

There are never enough zombies on this site so we thought we'd kick off 2014 with the first part of our roundup of 2013's Cape Town Zombie Walk, which, as usual, occurred a few days before Halloween as part of the annual Horrorfest. The walk started at Thibault Square in the centre of the city and meandered southwest along St George's Mall and past St George's Cathedral to the amphitheatre steps of the South African Museum in The Company's Garden before retracing its steps back along the very scenic route to Thibault Square.

The event started a bit later than in previous years, at 17:30, which meant that the walk was well timed for then the sun casts deep shadows between the buildings. It's also a dead time in the city, on a Saturday, as all the afternoon activities have wound up and it's far too early for the evening activities to start, so the city has an eerie, deserted quality about it with just a few poor souls wandering around, most of whom didn't know what they were in for.

Lurching Across Riebeek Street It does look a bit as though they've just vomited blood all over themselves. Yay.

(Then again, rather them than a bystander, innocent or not.)

Top Of The Mauling To You St George's Mall is a long pedestrian thoroughfare that connects Thibault Square on the foreshore in the north east with St George's Cathedral in the centre of the city (south west of the square). The steps of the Robert Gray Memorial at the top of the mall are one of the few spots where you can sit and eat what you've bought at the EarthFair Food Market, which is held every Thursday at lunch time, and they also proved to be a great place to capture this shot of the approaching horde.

(In a real-life approaching-horde situation it would probably be a better idea to run.)

Swing It, Brother! It does not have enough blood. He should just swing it to rectify that problem.

Creeping Past The Crypt Under St George's Cathedral (that big, stone building) there is a restaurant space, aptly named The Crypt, that has recently been reopened as a jazz club named The Crypt Jazz Restaurant. If you're not too busy shuffling past in search of brains both the cathedral and the jazz club are worth exploring.

Up Government Avenue After St George's Cathedral, at the bottom of Wale Street, the zombies shuffled into Government Avenue, which passes through The Company's Garden and past landmarks such as the Parliament Of The Republic Of South Africa (no brains), the South African National Library (theoretical brains), and the South African Museum (preserved brains).

Oh, Yo! It looks as though they are about to break into some sort of hip-hop routine but that is just a trick caused by the photography.

Make The Circle Bigger The horde amassed at the halfway point - the amphitheatre parking area outside the South African Museum - and took some time to mingle and taunt journalists while waiting for the straggling stragglers to catch up. (In their defence, it's hard to keep up to speed when you're missing a limb... or two.)

Smiley, Happy People It looks as though everyone's having a really good time (can't be, zombies!) but those are, in fact, grimaces frozen by the wonders of modern photography.

Devil's Peek A cloud covered Devil's Peak is elegantly framed by a tank cannon that serves as an artistic focal point in The Company's Garden.

Also, there's a zombie.

With that, we have come to the end of the first part of the zombie walk. The second part, which has now been posted, contains the first part but backwards and with more exhaustion and shadows (the sun was setting).

The 2013 Cape Town Zombie Walk was an official event of the 2013 Horrorfest.
