Millions (possibly billions) of LEGO bricks are heading for South Africa in time for the summer holidays in the form of the The Art Of The Brick exhibition, which will feature approximately 70 sculptures and artworks by US artist Nathan Sawaya.

News: The World's Biggest LEGO Exhibition Is Heading For South Africa

The Art Of The Brick, a massive art exhibition that features sculptures and wall hangings made entirely of LEGO bricks, is coming to Cape Town and Johannesburg. The pieces are all by acclaimed US artist Nathan Sawaya who is a LEGO Master Builder and a LEGO Certified Professional. Sawaya is a full-time artist who creates these works for private clients, as well as for the touring exhibition, at his workshops in New York and Los Angeles.

In 2012 I was able to attend the exhibition in Portland, Oregon, at the Oregon Museum of Science & Industry, and it was one of the highlights of my trip. The exhibition didn't disappoint at all and I was grateful for the opportunity as I didn't think it would ever come to South Africa even though it's been touring the US, Europe, Asia, and Australia extensively for years.

As the South African event is still four months away there is very little info about what we can expect here. I have emailed the PR representative with questions and will update this post if I receive a reply. Some of what I would like to know includes whether Nathan Sawaya will be coming to South Africa, whether we will get to see the impressive T-Rex sculpture that is made of 80 000 bricks, and whether photography will be permitted as it was in Portland.

Update, 5 September: I have received confirmation that Nathan will be coming to South Africa so that's something extra special to look forward to. He has been here previously, presenting at Design Indaba in 2012, but hopefully more members of the public might get to meet him this time.

I have also received confirmation that we
will be seeing the T-Rex sculpture in South Africa. There is still no word yet on whether the public will be able to take photos of the expo, however. We'll update this page again once we know.

The exhibition will kick off in Cape Town in December, conveniently for the school and tourist holidays, before moving to Johannesburg in 2015. Unfortunately, as usual, everyone else in the country will have to make a plan.

The Cape Town event seems to be well sorted out but the details for the Johannesburg event are still sparse so it's best to keep an eye on the Facebook page and Twitter feed.

Meanwhile, it seems as if the local organisers have some fun plans up their plastic sleeves in the runup to the exhibition opening:

Each exhibition setup changes slightly as Nathan updates it with new pieces he has made so there will be something new to see in South Africa even if, like me, you've attended one of the shows before. I can't wait. It will be suitable for both adults and kids and, unlike the recent dinosaur event, this one will not disappoint.
