Who has been making illegal candy (yes, really) and distributing it? Detective Ace Brickman (yes, really) is on the case in a new LEGO Creator modular building that features fun hiding places and some great new LEGO pieces.

The Detective's Office, the 10th, and latest, set in the LEGO Creator modular series was released to the public at the beginning of the month after having been announced at the end of November. It's a prohibition-era-inspired set with some whimsical inclusions that have delighted some fans and resulted in complaints from others because, of course, there's always the ornery 55-64-year-old LEGO builder.

These sets are an aspirational purchase for most, including myself at the moment, as they are very large and expensive, but I still think it's a really great set and it's one of my favourites in the modular series, which includes the Parisian Restaurant (set 10243), the Palace Cinema (set 10232), and the Town Hall (set 10224).

This modular building has a more prominent story to go with it: in the world of LEGO it's candy that has been banned, rather than alcohol, and detective Ace Brickman, whose office is on the middle floor of the set, is on the case to determine who is making the candy and distributing it. (The answer is a baker whose kitchen is one floor up....) The candy is being distributed around the building, which includes a pool hall called The Highlander and a barber's shop on the ground floor, via clandestine methods and with the help of hidden passages and storage areas.

You can watch the video below to see all the inside secrets, which include the hiding places for the candy storage barrel, the use of the tail piece that belongs to Unikitty (from The LEGO Movie) as an architectural detail on the top of the building, a pull-chain toilet, and a number of interesting accessories including a pair of scissors, which is a new piece, and a printed dartboard tile.

There are six minifigures in the set, including two women (a lady in red, which fits with the semi noir theme, and a police officer) and, as an Expert set, it comprises 2262 pieces so it should take six to 14 hours to complete, depending on the builder's level of proficiency.

The LEGO Creator Detective's Office kit (set 10246) will be available in South Africa in mid April 2015 and will cost just over R2000. It's already available in the US for US$159.99, as well as other markets served directly by the regional online LEGO shops.
