Cape Town pop-art artist Alex Hamilton is presenting a new group show in his Woodstock gallery featuring, as the central subject matter, one of his favourite artists - Frida Kahlo.

Last night a new exhibition opened at the Alex Hamilton Studio Gallery, The Frida Mash-Up. The exhibition showcases artworks featuring, and/or inspired by, Frida Kahlo (plus a few other unrelated items, as is always the case in an Alex Hamilton show) through a mash up of styles, mediums, and artists, some of whom have been featured at the gallery before and some of whom are new to the space.

Dominating the exhibition in terms of immediate eye-catching appeal are bright, stencilled pop-art portraits, both small and large sizes, by Alex Hamilton, who has also forayed into embroidery and assemblage for this exhibition, but once you start perusing the displays with more attention you'll find a delightfully eclectic mix of art styles and interpretations of the show's theme more delicately on offer in small frames or on pedestals.

Alex Hamilton is best known for his stencilled pop art, including his ongoing Cast & Crew project, in which thousands of "icons", as they are termed, from real life, fiction, and everything in between have been stencilled onto small wooden blocks, and the gallery has regularly been holding "mash-up" exhibitions, which are really just an excuse to put some cool art on display.

The Frida Mash-Up exhibition features work by mash-up newcomers Paul Birchall, Clementina van der Walt, Sandra Hanekom, Kim Longhurst, Juanette Smuts, Joubert Stander, Judy Woodborne, Kate Arthur, Sita Giri Le Gros, and Paula Van Coller Louw, as well as new pieces by veteran "mash-uppers" Corlie de Kock, Barry Barichievy, Terry Angelos, JP Meyer, Marinda Du Toit, Grace Kotze, Ella Cronje, and, of course, Alex Hamilton.

Last night's opening night was the busiest opening night I've ever seen at the studio and within a couple of hours roughly half the art had been sold, which would seem to indicate that the renowned Mexican painter and master of the self portrait is a popular subject for Capetonians.

If you're in the area you should make a point of going to see it in the next few weeks.
