The exhibition Building Blocks, which will showcase the work of Nadia Estelwen Viljoen and Alessandro Pappada, will be opening on 4 May 2017 in Durbanville, Cape Town. The core of Building Blocks focusses on LEGO, with the company's little plastic blocks and minifigs reinterpreted into new mediums, but the exhibition also dives into other pop-culture properties that have inspired the artists - in fact, May the 4th purists who think that the day should be reserved to celebrate Star Wars will be glad to know that the galaxy far, far away will be represented in the form of LEGO Star Wars minifigs depicted in the art of Nadia Estelwen Viljoen.

Viljoen studied fine art at the Ruth Prowse School Of Art and now teaches young people to paint at WHOW Studios, where the exhibition will be taking place. Her Building Blocks contributions will showcase paintings and etchings that have LEGO as the central theme but, in some cases, also reference DC, Marvel, and Disney characters.

Alessandro Pappada, who is a friend of brainwavez.org and occasional behind-the-scenes assistant here, is an accomplished ceramist who trained under Dr Ralph Johnson and now also lectures at WHOW Studios, as well as works as a part-time studio assistant to Hennie Meyer (of the Ukusela eKapa project). His work has been showcased at events such as Design Indaba and Hermanus FynArts.

His contribution will comprise a series of ceramic minifig heads, some of which are suitable for tea-light candles, while others are designed to hold plants. He will also be showcasing ceramic planters in the shape of different LEGO bricks, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle vessels, and, possibly some other pop-culture surprises.
