Kilian Martin: A Skate Illustration
A brainwavez.org Short-Film Review
The beauty of skateboarding is celebrated in a short piece that's expertly shot in urban and rural settings to allow colour, light, and architecture to complement the freestyle techniques. Kilian Martin: A Skate illustration is a combination of stylish skateboarding, a director who really knows how to move the camera to complement the freestyle flow, and clever use of slow motion interspersed with real time to emphasise key moments, all of which is well matched to the soundtrack "Rescue Radio" by Soft Bullets (UK musician Christopher Wall). The short, which was filmed earlier this year, highlights the impressive and unique techniques of professional freestyle Spanish skater Kilian Martin. To capture the beautiful slow moments filmmaker Brett Novak used a camera from Quench Studios that captures video at high speed, which results in slow-motion video when the footage is played back at normal speed. ![]() The result is this short, which was used in the documentary Concrete Circus that was made for and aired on Channel 4 in the UK in August this year by director Mike Christie. The documentary explores urban sports such as parkour, BMX biking, and skateboarding. ![]() This is the third in a series of Kilian Martin skateboarding shorts that Brett Novak has created over the past two years.
