It's time to sit behind your computer screen and shop till you drop (onto the keyboard from exhaustion). Skip the mall crowds, save your sanity, and use the annual brainwavez.org Gift Guide as a jumping off point for gifting awesome. Your friends will appreciate your great taste.

The 2014 brainwavez.org Gift Guide has been a long time in the making and lots of hard work (which is partly why it's late this year) but we think it's the best selection we've ever produced of fun, geeky gift ideas that should delight all but the most boring people (why do you know boring people anyway?).

As always, we have affiliate links to some of the companies - notably Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, iTunes, Kalahari.com, and TeeFury - so any shopping you do in that direction will help us to earn what we affectionately call "affiliate dribble". Every bit helps though - all the content on this site is lovingly produced for free every year and we appreciate your support. (As an aside, if you're into iOS and iTunes things, this article will explain how you can give a gift via that platform.)

There are also good options in the older gift guides (2013, 2012, 2011, and 2010) so have a look through those selections too once you're done here. Many of the items are still available and would be appreciated and enjoyed by the cool people in your life.

We hope you enjoy this year's selection. Happy shopping!

This ingenious paranormal story, portrayed as a mail-order catalogue for a shall-not-be-named Swedish modern furniture store, is surprisingly well told and a vibrant critique of consumerism. When employees notice the retail fixtures of this store are destroyed nightly, three daring employees stay in the store overnight to unravel the mystery with shocking and entertaining results. It's inventive fiction but it's also a witty critique of consumerism as a novel in disguise. -- JL

The Nightmare Cooperative is a roguelike turn-based puzzle game that's available for phones, tablets, and desktops in which you control a group of adventurers through a randomly generated dungeon (they're in search of gold but you quickly forget that as the puzzly strategy takes over). The dungeon is set out as a grid and with each turn you have to decide on the one-step direction you want the adventurers to move. The result is that one might kill an adjacent enemy, another might get stuck next to a wall, and third might die by stepping into an acid pool, for example. A combination of luck and skill determines how you manoeuvre your characters through each level and who you might have to sacrifice along the way to get to the end. Each character has a special skill that can help, or occasionally hinder, your moves along with a pickup slot that can be filled with an item that provides a special ability. Each quick game is challenging, frustrating, occasionally infuriating, and lots of fun, and there's a high replayability factor. -- MJW

Trevor Romain grew up in Johannesburg in the 70s and 80s but now lives in Texas where he produces educational books that deal with emotional and social challenges. Random Kak 2 is a sequel to his original memoir that once again mines South African nostalgia in illustrated and cartoon vignettes. The book amusingly tackles our unique language ("I klapped him one time and it was lights out, bru"), phrases ("you are getting on my last nerve"), and expressions ("woes"), as well as iconic products (Marmite) and cultural practices (safari suits) that are interspersed with reminisces of growing up in South Africa. It's endearing and instantly recognisable to anyone else who grew up with a similar background. -- MJW

This debut comic by Cape Town illustrator Shameema Dharsey will charm cat lovers (and anyone else who doesn't have a heart of stone). It's a frank, humorous, and warm portrayal of what life is like when you have a feline friend (or few) in your life, whether it's dealing with toxic waste or facing dilemmas caused by lap occupation. Fans of the Simon's Cat videos will love this comic and (pro tip!) it's much better than the Simon's Cat book. -- MJW

At times infections and witty, and at other times bordering on nonsensical, Lily Allen's 2014 release is a pop masterpiece. Her feminist anthems "Hard Out Here" and "Sheezus" are both powerful and fun, and solidify her as a true pop diva, one who is highly critical of pop culture as a whole. From start to finish dance lovers and pop culture junkies will delight in the album. You might want to get a copy for yourself, too. -- JL

Set in an alternate-universe Cape Town in the 17th century, The Souvenir re-imagines the classic folk tale of Van Hunks and the Devil, and hence the origin of the clouds that blanket Table Mountain and Devil's Peak, as well as the lesser known legend of the mythical character Adamastor. The text by Jayson Geland is almost lyrical and flows beautifully, while the art, by Daniël Hugo, wonderfully captures an environment Capetonians know well, yet with a mystical spin. The last few pages of the comic feature production notes and drawings, which are a welcome inclusion for any comics fan. -- MJW

Jason Batemen, Tina Fey, and Jane Fonda star in the film adaptation of the novel by Jonathan Tropper about a dysfunctional but loving family. The patriarch of the family passes away and the four Altman siblings and their respective significant others travel to their childhood home to stay with their mother to sit shiva, the Jewish mourning period. Throughout the film the characters reflect on their history together and the skeletons are let out of the closet one by one, often in hilarious, unexpected ways. What appears to be a dramatic downer on the surface is actually a loving, hilarious family story akin to Garden State and The Family Stone. -- JL

The Stumptown Volume 1 graphic novel collects the first four issues of the Stumptown crime-fiction comics series, which is written by Greg Rucka and illustrated by Matthew Southwood. The story sees Portland, Oregon-based private investigator Dex Parios of Stumptown Investigations hired to investigate the disappearance of a casino owner's granddaughter. It's a gritty love letter to Portland and features real locations in the background art. The book contains bonus materials, including a reprint of a rare eight-page short story, "Mustang Ranch", that features Dex on an earlier case. It is printed on high quality paper and is durably hard bound with a dust jacket, making it a great option for gift giving. -- MJW

Review: X-Men: Days Of Future Past
Hugh Jackman stars in the latest instalment of the X-Men film franchise and in this one he's tasked with saving the future of mutant and humankind from the actions of the past. He travels back in time to meet a younger Professor Xavier, Magneto, and Mystique, to stop an assassin and the ultimate creation of the robotic Sentinels from destroying and enslaving nearly everyone. This synopsis simplifies a great deal of an action-packed, entertaining film that has been one of the most successful movies of 2014. It rightly deserves a place in every movie and comic book lover's film collection. -- JL

This stunning collection features Missy Higgins's cover versions of Australian songs, ranging in repertoire from artists such as Something For Kate and Slim Dusty to Paul Kelly. Oz is a mix of piano-driven rock and orchestral ballads, with Missy Higgins's clear and poised vocals navigating lyrics that are not her own. The songs may be unknown to those outside of Australia but this is a fantastic introduction to Australian pop music and to Missy Higgins as an artist. There's also an accompanying book available for purchase, written by Missy Higgins, that details her ruminations and reflections on each song and their importance in her life. -- JL

By design you're left with a lot of questions at the end of this book but it's up to you, dear reader, to determine the answers. After a particularly vicious bar fight war-zone journalist Remco de Heer is charged with assault and locked up in The Institute For Forensic Observation for psychological evaluation. There he's surrounded by rapists, murderers, psychopaths, and paedophiles, many of whom begin to spill their secrets to him as he provides them with the attention they are desperately seeking. Meanwhile part of Remco's therapy includes intellectual cat-and-mouse sessions with psychiatrists and the subconscious channelling of trauma as he writes what he claims are harrowing fictional stories based on fact, all written from the perpetrator's perspective, but as the book progresses more of Remco's demons are revealed and it becomes apparent that he is becoming an increasingly unreliable narrator, which leads us back to the end - and the beginning. -- MJW

In a post-apocalyptic world in which most of the humans have died out due to a flu pandemic, Hig and his dog Jasper live near the mountains of Colorado, USA, in an old airplane hangar. While out on one of his routine flights in a small Cessna plane - part of his reconnaissance for marauders - he hears a call through the radio from distant survivors. He must choose to stay where he is and eke out a living, fighting against the occasional bandit, or fly past the mountain range to see if there is civilization somewhere else. Peter Heller's novel is a gripping tale of survival and difficult choices and is grounded with such practical realism and attention to detail that it makes one of the most convincing and engaging in the genre. -- JL

Over 4000 cartoons by South African political cartoonist Zapiro, which appeared in numerous local publications, were reduced to a selection of 450 for this anthology that summarises the first 20 years of democracy in South Africa, including the sporting highs, the political-scandal lows, and everything in between. (The selection was further reduced to 60 for an exhibition that was held earlier this year in Cape Town.) Commentary, written by Mike Wills, accompanies each cartoon to summarise what was happening at the time in case the reader's memory needs jogging. Taken as a whole the book is a fantastic, although frequently depressing, exploration of the last 20 years and a wonderful reminder of just how much the country has been through during that time. -- MJW

We're under no illusions about the price of this set, or the rarity, but if you're a fan of The Simpsons or LEGO none of that is likely to matter. This kit features the house of the Simpsons, which opens up so you can access the interior rooms from the back, and comprises 2523 pieces so it should keep the kit builder busy for a while. It includes six minifigs, which are different designs to the minifig blind-bag collectibles that you can buy, as well as a number of fun additions such as a piano, a skateboard ramp for Bart, a barbecue, and the famous living room couch (although fans have been quick to point out that it's too small to fit the entire family at once). There is also quite a large collection of minifig accessories, including a vacuum cleaner, sausages, a pot, a pan, a magnifying glass, plates, tools, a toolbox, and a briefcase. This set has consistently received high marks and praise from fans and will be a worthy addition to someone's LEGO collection. -- MJW

Though the music is undeniably pop and full of earworms, the lyrics are smart and deserving of a second or third listen. Bastille is a band not to be written off simply due to its popularity. -- JL

Members of the brainwavez.org team have been charmed while playing developer releases of indie game Cosmochoria for the past few months, thanks to the game's creator Nate Schmold who crowdfunded the costs for the development of the game via Kickstarter. You play as a tiny, naked, jetpacked cosmonaut who has to revive a procedurally generated galaxy by planting seeds on barren planets that will grow into new plant life and revitalise each planet. Of course alien enemies are always nearby to try to derail your attempts and to interfere with your exploration of the galaxy as you find mysterious artifacts that will uncover the truth of your pantslessness and reveal more of your destiny. The game is not yet out, except via Early Access on Steam, but will be released early next year so consider a pre-order gift code for the gamer(s) in your life from the Humble Store, which will include a Steam code. The game is being developed DRM free for Windows, Mac OS, and Linux, with a Wii U version to follow. -- MJW

This year comics writer Mike Carey, who charmed audiences as a featured guest at the 2014 Open Book Comics Festival in Cape Town, published a new novel, The Girl With All The Gifts, which is a zombie tale with a twist on the usual fight-or-flight fare. Rather than simply focussing on a group of survivors, although there's some of that too, the core of the story revolves around a protagonist who is an intelligent, empathetic 10-year-old girl. The catch? She doesn't know she's a zombie. She has lived underground in a secret military base for as long as she can remember but, unknown to her, she's actually being held and studied by a group of scientists who are trying to find a cure and determine where the sentience comes from. Rather than a horror novel The Girl With All The Gifts is an excellent exploration of what it means to be human - with a little of the grotesque thrown in for good measure. It's bound to delight zombie fans. -- MJW

Comedy Club is an anthology of work from the past year by South African political cartoonist Jerm, whose loose style perfectly emulates the chaos we've been experiencing in the country, although his cartoons delve into broader topics than just South African politics and often venture into international issues. The cartoons are beautifully presented in full colour, one per page, and there is occasional commentary to clarify the context, although more would have been welcome. As a bonus, a few cartoons that were rejected are interspersed in the collection, providing a fascinating insight into censorship and, on one occasion, self censorship in a country that supposedly supports freedom of expression. Fans of Jerm's irreverent take on difficult topics will be particularly pleased with this collection. -- MJW

The subtitle of this hilarious book, with its vibrant, in-your-face illustrations, neatly captures everything about this book. Allie Brosh, from Bend, Oregon, maintains the wildly popular blog Hyperbole And A half, which is famous for the "Clean All The Things!" meme, but started as an outlet for her depression. The book includes stories from her life, including her incapable ability to care for her adorable dog, her social anxiety, and her childhood. The book is as silly as it is entertaining, and as poignant as it is colourful. -- JL
