Hacker Samaritan's primary targets are no longer corrupt mega churches. Instead she's intent on taking down the world's largest military contractor - but it's going to be tricky as the US government wants her dead.

Comics To Note: Samaritan: Veritas #1 By Matt Hawkins And Atilio RojoOver the past few years Top Cow's Matt Hawkins has been developing the Edenverse, a shared universe in which many of his comic titles are set, although I think the first few comics led to the Edenverse developing, rather than the other way around.

Key for new readers who may not know whether they should jump into Think Tank (hard science themes), Postal (noir themes), or The Tithe (crime and hacking themes with a religious centre) is that they can all be read individually and independently. However when you put them together this bigger world emerges that is richer, and which led to a crossover title, Eden's Fall, that brought many characters together for a hard hitting start to the second Edenverse story arc.

We're now at the start of the third arc with the release of Samaritan: Veritas #1, a new title that's a sequel to the series The Tithe that follows the story of the hacker Samaritan, who was created by Matt Hawkins and Rahsan Ekedal. Issue #1 is drawn and coloured by Atilio Rojo and is lettered by Troy Peteri. The cover is also by Atilio Rojo.

In this issue Samaritan is off the grid and far from the US as she's on the run from the US government, which is intent on killing her, not arresting her. When she discovers that the new US president is a corrupt politician from her past she decides it's time to come out of hiding and take him down for his past crimes, which requires getting access to the one man the president seems to fear, Richard Lawton, the CEO of defence contractor Northlock Industries.

Samaritan is a strong female character who is positioned as being one of the best hackers in the world. Her motivations are also a flip on a common trope (intentional, I'm sure) in that she is out for revenge due to the death of a loved one but she's also determined to find proof of the president's crimes because the victims and their families deserve to know the truth. Her past hacking crimes have largely targeted corrupt mega churches that prey on gullible followers so her escapades, though illegal, have had a Robin Hood intention behind them.

Again, you don't need to have read any of the Edenverse titles to enjoy Samaritan: Veritas #1 and it's a good jumping in point for new readers. Although the story does mention events that occurred in other comics it's quite clear what's important about those plot points without you needing to know the specifics.

Samaritan: Veritas #1 was released on Wednesday, 24 May 2017, but your local comic shop may still be able to get a back issue using the Diamond code MAR170694. You can buy it, worldwide, through Things From Another World or digitally via the Image Comics store.

The press copy of Samaritan: Veritas #1 was provided by Top Cow.
