The annual Inktober art event, which was begun by US artist Jake Parker in 2009, begins, as always, on 1 October. Participants are encouraged to create a drawing or doodle a day, in ink, for the course of the month and post it online on social media.

If that's too much they can opt for every second day or even once a week - the point is to create something and improve your art. You don't have to be an artist to join in; you just need to want to participate. Anyone can grab a pen and start doodling.

Every year a number of South African comics creators join in, though few have ever made it all the way through to the end of the month. What's important is the effort that they do put in, which helps to make them better artists.

Jake Parker has posted a "prompt list" (above) for people finding themselves out of inspiration. You don't need to follow it (and you can even make your own if there's a specific theme or topic you want to focus on) but if you get stuck it's a handy tool to inspire your creativity.

Parker has also partnered with Adobe this year and this has resulted in the release of a special Inktober themed brush set, designed by Kyle Webster from the Adobe Design Team, for Photoshop and Sketch.

You can download the set for free from Adobe's web site by going to this link and clicking the download icon in the top-right-hand corner. The file is around 14 MB. Although it's odd to see digital tools being promoted for an event that was specifically intended to encourage people to work on their physical skills you may as well grab a free gift while it's available.
