The Most Awesomest Thing Ever
The Centre For The Easily Amused

Here's a bit more frivolity before we dive back into serious subjects. It is: The Most Awesomest Thing Ever! It's a little project in progress (possibly forever) and, if you're open to it, it presents certain philosophical conundrums to keep you on your toes (mentally speaking).

ButtersThe Most Awesomest Thing Ever is a site that pits two random, usually unrelated, items from its database against each other in the "Battle" arena. You job is to pick the one that you think is more awesome by clicking on it, at which point another two items will be presented, until you get bored and return to Twitter. The site's design includes schlocky, fun, "versus" graphics and appropriate deep-voiced announcement sound effects, and it's very amusing. After clicking on an item its win-loss record is displayed, as well as its current "Most Awesomest" ranking. Over time, as visitors' choices are aggregated, items begin to emerge in the top 10 and the bottom rankings. It's interesting to see what begins to happen when the world's opinions are processed.

On the "versus" screen you can click the "What Is This?" button for a window popup to Wikipedia and the tiny "Info" text underneath it for the direct link to the Creative Commons image that's used in the system. It's all above board. Much of the content is added in this way via users - you can "suggest awesomeness" in the form of a link to the Wikipedia entry of the item that you wish to submit and a link to an image (where available) in the Creative Commons that represents that concept.

Every once in a while the battle mode throws out a pairing that will give you pause for thought. Mine was "telescope" versus "chocolate". I had been click click clicking away with a happy, easy rhythm, going with my gut instinct and finding I had to give the choices very little consideration, when that combination popped up on screen and it stopped me dead in my tracks. I couldn't think. I couldn't make a choice. I stared at the screen. The chocolate stared back. Science screamed "What the hell are you doing? It's science!" in my head. I looked at the telescope. I thought about astronomy, the planets, the universe, Copernicus, man's most amazing discoveries compounding exponentially century after century, always leading to the stars, and the atom. Big and small, all symbolised in this one concept. The chocolate said "...but I'm chocolate!" "You totally are," I thought.

It took forever to make a decision. There's no "skip" button in a most awesomeness battle. You can't ignore lessons destiny is intent on teaching you.

The site is a crazy trip around science, technology, and pop culture that provides a few laughs and some unexpected pauses for thought. It's a good, brief Zen diversion during a stressful day and, due to the ever increasing content, always able to offer fresh existensial crises. Use at your peril - and for your enlightenment. What do you get when you mash up Jane Austen's Regency-era characters and sensibilities with Fight Club? Well the first rule of fight club is that one never mentions fight club. (But the answer is blood on your lace and scrapes on your knees, of course.)
