Art Auction Raises Money For Mama Taxi's Deni Brown
Fans and friends of
Mama Taxi's co-creator Deni Brown gathered in Muizenberg last month to raise funds, in the form of an art auction, to help with Brown's medical costs.

Last month Alive Café in Muizenberg, Cape Town, hosted an art auction in aid of raising funds to cover medical costs for Deni Brown, who was recently diagnosed with cancer. Brown is half the creative team behind the newspaper cartoon strip Mama Taxi
- she writes the words while cartoonist Gavin Thomson illustrates. The cartoon features the adventures of a female taxi driver and her friends (and occasionally the local traffic law enforcement) in Cape Town.
The auction featured dozens of works exclusively by female artists, many of whom are local to the Muizenberg area, which were kindly donated in aid of the cause. They included a massive, beautiful painting by kEda Gomes
that was bought by a restaurant (I think it was Café Pescado
in Simon's Town).
To add to the fun Oom Schalk Lourens
, an alter ego of actor David Muller
, acted as the auctioneer and host for the evening as he drummed up enthusiasm for bidding wars while entertaining the guests with his over-the-top persona.
The evening also featured some spot prizes, a raffle, and some lucky draws in which guests won artworks, books, and Mama Taxi
Ultimately, the fundraiser was a huge success - the event raised just over the target goal in a couple of hours, which will go a long way to helping with Brown's medical costs.
