The South African FIFA 15 launch featured a showdown between celebrity gamers and their friends, as well as four lucky fans who got to join in on the action, in a knockout tournament on the Xbox One at MWEB's offices in Cape Town.

At the end of September MWEB GameZone hosted the South African launch party for FIFA 15, which took the form of a four-team showdown using the Xbox One. Each team comprised three celebrities and a gamer from the audience. The teams were then pitted against each other in a knockout tournament to determine the victor, with each team member of the winning team going on to win an Xbox One console, as well as other goodie-bag prizes.

This year, instead of the event taking place in the MCave, a gamer's paradise inside the MWEB building in Parow, Cape Town, a group comprising the media and gamers was led to a basement room that was kitted out as a mini soccer festival, with gaming stations, stands for seating, Astroturf, and team benches. The event was MCed by Good Hope FM DJ (and avid gamer) Carl Wastie.

Once everyone had settled in and had been welcomed by MWEB's Brad Kirby the celebrity teams, comprising three players, were announced and then four fourth players were added via an automated fancy random-selection process that scoured Twitter looking for a specific hashtag and then made a choice.

The celebrity teams comprised:

Netherlands: Jack Parow (captain), Alan Meyer, and Daniel Buys.

Spain: SeanO (captain), SK Tsubane, and Eugene Mpatheni.

Germany: Siv Ngesi (captain), Ricardo Patane, and DJ Lyle.

Argentina: Tapfuma Makina (captain), Tongai Jinda, and Katlego Maboe.

A special "Tweet Couch", which had the best view in the room right in front of an 85-inch Hisense T910 Vision Series TV and a massive snack station, was also set up and, in preparation for the start of the tournament, audience members were encouraged to tweet to win a spot on the couch to watch all the action.

Once the winner was chosen the teams were given a few minutes to pose for photographs and get settled on their benches in front of their 75-inch Hisense T910 Vision Series TVs and then the matches commenced, refereed by Clint O'Shea, otherwise known as Zombie Dredd from Zombiegamer.
The rules were as follows:

Three matches would be played: two knockouts and the final.
Each match would last five minutes of real-world time.
In each team two team members would play in the first half, then at half time they would swap out and the remaining two team members would play in the second half.

The Netherlands Versus Spain
Up first was Jack Parow's The Netherlands versus SeanO's Spain. The Netherlands got off to an impressive start, almost scoring within the first few minutes but unfortunately hitting a goal post, and then attaining a goal in the 16th minute, which immediately put the pressure on Spain to equalise or risk falling out of the mini tournament.

Unfortunately in the 33rd minute Spain, possibly due to some panicked play by the gamers that resulted in bad behaviour by the soccer players on screen, was awarded a red card and, now a man down, things were looking dire. Soon after The Netherlands had another opportunity to score, from the resulting free kick, but missed, and after that there were just scrambles at the goals and missed opportunities as the gamers attempted to score but got nowhere.

Five minutes of stoppage time were added before half time and The Netherlands had another opportunity to score but just missed with the ball flying past on the outside of the goal. During half time Spain tried delaying tactics under the guise of "reorganising the team", so much so that everyone in the room practically had time to eat dinner, which was courtesy of MWEB and Wimpy.

After an interminable amount of time Spain eventually settled on player placements and a team formation and the second half began with the second pair of gamers in each team taking hold of the controls, which meant that anything could now happen. The second half was much more lively, with both teams finding more opportunities to aim for the net.

In the 48th minute The Netherlands tried to score but missed. In the 56th minute the same thing happened to Spain. In the 62nd minute The Netherlands was thwarted by Spain's goalkeeper and the missed another shot in the 66th minute. In the 72nd minute an attempt by Spain was easily caught by The Netherland's goalkeeper and in the 74th minute a corner kick from The Netherlands rebounded off a player at the goal but even though the team managed to get hold of the ball again quite quickly its second attempt also missed.

For the next eight minutes no one was able to get the upper hand until the 82nd minute, when The Netherlands placed a beautiful goal in the corner of the net, bringing the score to 2-0. Five minutes later the team scored again. The outcome was looking dire for Spain.

Neither team scored in the final three minutes and then four minutes of stoppage time were added in which Spain managed to get the ball to the goal area but, unfortunately, the shot missed.

The match therefore ended with a score of 3-0 to Jack Parow's The Netherlands and SeanO's Spain was out of the tournament.

Germany Versus Argentina
The second match saw the other two teams, headed by Siv Ngesi (Germany) and Tapfuma Makina (Argentina), face off for a chance in the final. In the 13th minute Germany had its first chance to score but missed and in the 25th minute Argentina was awarded a yellow card. Four minutes later Germany scored and Argentina tried to equalise two minutes later but the ball shot just over the top of the net.

The match started to heat up as, three minutes later, Germany tried to score again but unfortunately the ball missed just on the outside of the net. That didn't dissuade the team, however, and right after, in the 38th minute, Germany managed to find the back of the net, bringing the score to 2-0. Unfortunately, soon after Germany experienced an injury, with Müller landing on his elbow. He had to be substituted with Draxler.

Five minutes of stoppage time were added, during which Germany made another attempt at scoring but missed. This time there was no delay during half time and after a quick break to switch between the gamers the second half of the match commenced.

The first few minutes were quiet until the 55th minute, when Germany attempted a corner kick that looked like it might get directed into the net, except Argentina's goalkeeper was well placed and dived to catch it. Four minutes later it was the turn of Germany's goalkeeper to show off his skills as he deftly defended against an Argentinian attack. In the 67th minute Germany again got the ball to the goal area but weren't able to make anything of the run as Argentina skillfully defended against the attempt.

In the 74th minute Germany tried to score once again but the kick went straight to the Argentina's goalkeeper. Two minutes later Argentina had the ball back across the field and looked set to score at an open goal but some bizarre controller work by the gamers caused the player to run the ball along the goal line straight in front of the goal - but he never took a shot. By the time he was lined up Germany's defenders had arrived to take back the ball and that was the end of Argentina's chance at scoring. With the score at 2-0 to Germany, the outcome was now looking absolutely dire for Argentina.

In the 86th minute the game was secured for Germany as Drexler, the player who had been brought on the field as a substitute in the first half, found the net, giving germany a decisive 3-0 lead with only a few minutes left in the game. Four minutes of stoppage time were added and Argentina tried once again to score but, again, missed a good opportunity.

The match then ended at 3-0 to Siv Ngesi's Germany. Tapfuma Makina's Argentina team was out of the tournament.

The Netherlands Versus Germany
After a quick break for some snacks, some commiseration (where applicable), and to set up for the final match between Jack Parow's The Netherlands and Siv Ngesi's Germany, the tournament commenced in Amsterdam Arena.

Both teams spent the first few minutes getting comfortable in the game and then the match was on after The Netherlands scored in the 14th minute with a beautiful kick that flew straight past Germany's goalie. In the 23rd minute Germany tried to equalise but the attempt was a failure and five minutes later when the team tried again the ball bounced off the goalie and away from the goal area. The team then tried again but this time the attempt was well defended by The Netherlands' goalie.

For the next while neither team could get the upper hand until the 43rd minute, when The Netherlands attempted a run at the goal that was thwarted by Germany.

Three minutes of stoppage time were added in which Germany just missed equalising with an attempt that just missed and shot past on the outside of the goal.

During half time the teams switched gamers so, although The Netherlands was leading 1-0 it meant that anything could happen in the second half as the two new players competing for each side got to grips with the game.

The second half got off to a dramatic start as The Netherlands player Daley Blind was awarded a yellow card and then 10 minutes later Germany made a beautiful run to the goal and scored, bringing the match to 1-1. The team was well on its way to scoring a second goal six minutes later but an offside infraction was called and The Netherlands was awarded an indirect free kick.

In the 72nd minute The Netherlands was awarded a penalty kick after a Germany player crashed into one of its team members and the kick resulted in some great team work and a goal, bringing the score to 2-1 to The Netherlands. Seven minutes later, however, The Netherlands was awarded another yellow card due to a tackle that the game referee deemed to be dangerous. Outraged cries were heard from members of the audience as the call was overwhelmingly deemed to be overly harsh but, unfortunately, the match's real-life referee had no way to fix the problem and Germany was awarded a free kick. Luckily The Netherlands defended well and so the match continued with the score still standing at 2-1.

For the next while neither team was able to gain the upper hand until the 87th minute, when The netherlands brought the ball right to the goal and looked to score for a third time. Unfortunately for the team Germany's defence thwarted the attempt but now the pressure was on for Germany to get an equalising goal and send the game into extra time.

Five minutes of stoppage time were added, which meant Germany would have one, at most two chances to score. It tried valiantly with a very close attempt that just missed and so, at full time, it unfortunately had to concede defeat. The Netherlands team, led by rapper Jack Parow, became the MWEB FIFA 15 celebrity tournament champions.

With that, the evening came to an end - for the celebrities, anyway, as many of the audience members stayed on to try out FIFA 15 on consoles that had been set up around the room.
