This year's first FIFA 15 T-Fest e-sports tournament, organised by Zombiegamer, drew some new faces to the event, which featured a round robin first round before knockout stages separated the best from the rest.

The February T-Fest e-sports event at Trenchtown in Observatory, Cape Town, was held on the same weekend as Design Indaba (and other shows), which I attended to cover the South African comics events that were happening there. However I was able to duck out long enough to stop by Trenchtown to catch some of the highlights of Zombiegamer Events' first FIFA 15 tournament for the year.

The tournament drew 32 players, including some new faces, and both Xbox 360 and Xbox One consoles were used. There were eight Xbox 360 players in the event, as well as some PlayStation gamers who, presumably reluctantly, switched to the Xbox One to compete. The first round took the form of a round robin and comprised eight groups of four players, with the top two from each group going through to the knockout stage - 16 players participating in single elimination. Each matchup comprised both home and away matches and the scores were determined on aggregate based on the away-goal rule, in which goals scored by players playing the away match are given more weight.

I stopped by as the round robin was winding up so these photos are from that time period. Zombiegamer has an excellent roundup of what happened next, starting with the quarter finals.

As you can see from the brackets above Mubeen Gaffoor, Jayson Morgan, Tauriq Gamieldien, and Zaid Patel made it through to the semi finals. Jayson Morgan was the winner of last year's R10K challenge and Mubeen Gaffoor placed third in that event (and both players regularly place in FIFA tournaments) but it was good to see different players also making it into the top four slots this time.

The semi finals were apparently quite a tense set of matches, with Jayson Morgan and Zaid Patel making it to the finals. Jayson Morgan eventually won and received R1250 in cash plus a R100 Xbox Live voucher sponsored by Digicodes. Zaid Patel received R500 and a R100 Xbox Live voucher and Mubeen Gaffoor, who placed third, received R250 and a R100 Xbox Live voucher.

You can read Zombiegamer's full report of the event here and view more photos form the day in the event's Facebook album. The next T-Fest is scheduled for 28 March 2015 and will comprise a flashback gaming event consisting of free-for-all Halo 4 and Gears Of War tournaments, as ell as a few other surprise games for the less tournament inclined to play. All the details for the day are here.
