Journalists from around South Africa, plus a handful of lucky gamers, got a chance to try out DOOM at the MWEB MCave at the official launch of the game. TGN Racing Simulators also showcased VR games at the event to give gamers a break from the intense deathmatches.

DOOM was launched in Cape Town on Friday night at an event at MWEB's MCave. The MWEB launches are usually organised for the gamers, to which journalists are invited, whereas this launch, which was held in MWEB's space but was not hosted by the company, was instead organised for journalists, to which a handful of gamers received an invitation, so it resulted in a more subdued occasion that finished earlier than usual.

Nevertheless, it was still an opportunity to try out the game and play against friends. DOOM was made available on Windows machines for anyone who wanted to try it and prizes were up for grabs from random draws, as well as for winners of in game challenges that were announced throughout the evening, such as achieving a specific Soul Harvest score. Both single player and multiplayer options were set up for people to try whatever most appealed to them so team deathmatches were soon taking place around the room.

There was also a three screen setup for those who wanted a more immersive experience.

The gaming stations were kept pretty busy throughout the evening so I took the opportunity to experiment with a BlackBerry PRIV that I have been testing and decided to shoot footage to put together a video with highlights from the event, which you can see further up in this article. You can read more on how I made the video, and what Android software I used, here.

The VR Interlude

TGN Racing Simulators also had a VR setup on display to showcase the Oculus and some of the software and games that are available. I had a chance to try out titles such as InMind and Lucky's Tale.

InMind is a simulation in which you go into a brain to nuke bad cells by moving your head to point a bullseye at the targets.

Lucky's Tale is a third person platform action game in which you control a fox using a gamepad. The camera viewpoint moves on a fixed rail but you can move your head around and view everything in 3D from the fixed point while you control the fox to grab pickups and bounce on objects and surfaces. It's a very surreal experience but lots of fun.

The VR was great but back to DOOM. Here are some photos from the event. You can see even more on the Zombiegamer Facebook page.
