Now is a great time to buy some South African comics directly from the creators. Indie Comics SA is running a promotion that offers a free trading-card-sized artwork to the first 20 shoppers who spend R200 or more - and it's open to customers worldwide.

Fifteen South African comics creators, including Danelle Malan and Ben G Geldenhuys of Cottonstar, Josh Ryba of Rebirth, Jarred Cramer of Juvies, Andrew Cramer of Week Daze, Moray Rhoda of Sector, and Shameema Dharsey of The Cat Lady, are participating in a promotion for Indie Comics SA for which they have produced 20 original one-of-a-kind ACEO (Art Cards, Editions and Originals) cards, each of which is signed and numbered.

The first 20 people who place an order for R200 or more (excluding shipping) will receive a giveaway ACEO card in their package. The web site will be posting teasing reveals of five cards at a time each Sunday for a month, starting this Sunday, so you can get a idea of what is available, although cards will be inserted randomly into orders to keep it fair.

ACEO cards are ATCs (Artist Trading Cards) that are produced specifically to be sold but can also be given away. ATCs originated in Switzerland in the 1990s and are standard trading-card-sized artworks that artists and collectors swap and collect. They fit into standard card sleeves so it's easy to keep a collection pristine in a card binder.

Indie Comics South Africa is a venture that was started by Deon de Lange, the creator of Gofu and co-creator of Tomica, and who is assisted by Diorgo Jonkers of GEP, to make it easier for fans of South African indie comics to buy the publications from one central hub at any time (and save on shipping in the process).

The site offers comics, prints, original art, collectibles, and art supplies and ships worldwide. Over 25 creators have already joined the community and made their work available but the catalogue continues to grow quite quickly.

To participate in the promotion grab three or four comics, pad your order with prints and artworks or stickers and trading cards if it doesn't reach R200, and you'll be set.

Payment is via EFT or PayFast (which uses 3D Secure) for South African customers or a manual PayPal invoice (converted from rands to US dollars at the current Xe.com rate) for international customers. Shipping is via Fastway couriers (from R60) for South African addresses and international registered airmail for international customers.

As a bonus, if you live in Cape Town, you can apply the discount code VREDEHOEKPICKUP to your order and you won't be charged for delivery if you're willing to pick up your order from Vredehoek.

The promotional cards will go to the first 20 shoppers, whether that takes a day or a month, so if you want one it's best to act fast - head over to Indie Comics SA and fill up your cart.
