A new volume of the superhero comic Stray is in the works and the first issue is due in September from Action Lab with three cover options. Here's more information on what to expect in the ongoing series, as well as a guide to pre ordering the issue.

News: Stray Is Back - Pre Order Issue #1 Now

The first issue of the next volume of Stray, the superhero comic co-created by Vito Delsante and Sean Izaakse, is now available for pre order through Diamond, the company that distributes comics to comic shops. The comic will arrive in stores in September 2017 but it's important to pre order to ensure that your comic shop gets a copy for you.

The issue was made possible due to a successful Kickstarter campaign that ran last year to keep funding going for the series. Consequently backers of that campaign have already been able to read the first two issues of the new volume, which delves into Stray/Rodney Weller's childhood years as The Rottweiler, the sidekick to the superhero The Doberman.

Fans of Sean Izaakse's work will be disappointed to hear that he has taken a back seat for this volume but this is how he has been able to generate so much work for Marvel in the past few months, which has culminated in him becoming the regular artist on Uncanny Avengers, as of issue #26 (and who can object to that career achievement?).

The bulk of Izaakse's contributions for the new volume of Stray are the covers, although he still has input into the story as a co-creator of the series and he drew the first page of the first issue. The line art duties have therefore been taken over by Lee Gaston, whose style has a more cartoonish flair that's particularly emphasised in the comic's flashback scenes to Rodney's childhood adventures. These flashback scenes are coloured by Wilson Ramos, Jr, while the present-day scenes are coloured by Chris O'Halloran.

The first issue is being produced with three covers. The first, pictured above, is by Sean Izaakse and Chris O'Halloran. The second is a popular "action figure" style cover by David Golding, with the background art on the toy's packaging board by Sean Izaakse. The third is an Eighties homage cover by Sean Izaakse and Chris O'Halloran that references an iconic poster for the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off starring Matthew Broderick.

News: Stray Is Back - Pre Order Issue #1 NowThe numbering and naming is a little weird so here's what you need to know if you want to collect the new volume. This is issue number one that starts the second volume in the Stray series, The Rottweiler Years. The first volume, Who Killed The Doberman?, ran for four issues and was collected as a trade paperback in 2016. (It's out of stock on Raru but you can back order it through Things From Another World or via your local comic shop.)

Action Lab is currently calling this new issue of Stray "Actionverse #1 Featuring Stray", which is very confusing because although "Actionverse" is the name of the universe that Action Lab titles such as Molly Danger, Midnight Tiger, Stray, and so forth share, it was also used as the name of the crossover event from last year that featured an epic story that spanned seven comics with all these characters coming together across six titles. (You can buy the Actionverse trade paperback through Raru, Things From Another World, or your local comic shop.)

In contrast this new volume of Stray is standalone (and hopefully the start of an ongoing series), although Stray the character continues to live within the Actionverse, but Action Lab's naming seems to suggest this is another crossover event, which it is not. Hopefully by the time the comic comes out in September everyone will just be calling it Stray #1 (although Stray #5 would have been better).

If you're still confused don't worry - here's how to get the issue: give the code of the cover variant that you prefer to your local comic shop and ask it to order it for you.

• The main cover's code is JUL171261.
Things From Another World ]

• Variant B (the David Golding action-figure cover) is JUL171262.
Things From Another World ]

• Variant C (the Sean Izaakse Eighties homage cover) is JUL171263.
Things From Another World ]

It's possible that the variant covers may only be produced in limited quantities so you will have to check if your comic shop can get a copy for you. All three will be available at Things From Another World, as you can see via the links above.

Next, ask the comic shop to create an ongoing subscription for you so you don't have to request forthcoming issues individually when they are announced. This is also important to ensure that the series continues as it can be cancelled (by the distributors!) if it doesn't draw enough pre orders. (It's all part of how the current comics-distribution system is broken but until it's fixed this is the best way that you can support your favourite creators and ensure their work continues to be published.)

Stray #1 will be out on 6 September 2017. has an affiliate relationship with Raru (South Africa) and Things From Another World (international). Please consider using the links to order your comics: your purchase helps to fund the running of this web site.
