Three new playable characters will be coming to the video game Injustice 2 soon as part of the game extension Fighter Pack 2. A showcase video for the first, Black Manta, has also been released and it offers some clues as to his fighting style. Plus, there's some brief news on a sale that South Africans should take advantage of this week.

News: Injustice 2 Fighter Pack 2 Characters And Black Manta Gameplay Revealed

Hellboy, Raiden, and Black Manta have been announced as the three playable characters that will be added to Injustice 2 as part of Fighter Pack 2, the game's second DLC (downloadable content) pack that offers new fighters for gamers to compete with, and the Ultimate Edition of the game, which includes all the downloadable content. Injustice 2 is a fighting game for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One that was released earlier this year and which takes place in the DC Comics superhero universe. It is a sequel to Injustice: Gods Among Us, which was released in 2013.

Details of the three new fighters were released last week and the gameplay video for the first, Black Manta, was posted early this morning (South African time) to showcase some of his special moves and his super move.

First, the reveal. It has been known since July that Black Manta, who already appears in the game as a non-playable character during a stage transition in Atlantis, would become a playable character as it was accidentally leaked in the Xbox Live Marketplace when a tab briefly appeared saying "Fight as Black Manta in Injustice 2". Another clue was his silhouette in the fighter-selection screen, which is very distinctive. Black Manta, therefore, was no surprise.

Neither was Raiden, a character from the Mortal Kombat universe, as the silhouette of his distinctive Asian conical hat has been another clue that's been sitting in the fighter-selection screen for months. When Sub-Zero was announced as a playable character for Fighter Pack 1 it seemed certain that Raiden would be added to the game soon, especially since its developers, NetherRealm Studios, also developed the fighting game Mortal Kombat X, which was released in 2015.

The third fighter, Hellboy, was a huge surprise. Hellboy is a comics superhero created by writer-artist Mike Mignola that has grown into an independent comics franchise that's also spilled into live-action cinema, animated films, novels, and video games.

The reaction to Fighter Pack 2 has been mixed. There were very few comments regarding Black Manta, until the gameplay video was posted, which elicited praise, but there were thousands of fan complaints on YouTube and Twitter surrounding Hellboy and, especially, Raiden. Hellboy fans argued about whether he should be smoking a cigarette or a cigar. DC fans were upset that a second fighter slot has been taken up by a Mortal Kombat character, when they feel it should have gone to a suitable lightning focussed DC character, and that a third slot has been taken up by something so random and unexpected.

The backlash, against Raiden in particular, has been quite venomous considering that this is a video game and people need to get a life. In four years no one will be playing the game anyway because Injustice 3 will probably have been released (at which point people will have new things to complain about). The lack of perspective is typical of fandoms and really creates an unwelcoming environment for more casual fans or balanced fans, such as myself, who are happy to see little bit of a crossover. After all - again - it is just a game.

For gamers tired of the overwhelming number of Batman villains in Injustice 2, as the game does seem to favour his universe over the realms of the other DC characters in the game, Black Manta comes as welcome relief to balance the lineup sightly. Black Manta is a supervillain and archenemy of Aquaman who will be appearing in the forthcoming Aquaman film, which will be released in December 2018.

Black Manta from our universe has two origin stories, one from 1993, in which he was kidnapped as a boy and forced into slavery on a ship, and another from 2003 in which Arkham Asylum features as it seems we just can't escape Gotham entirely. It remains to be seen what Black Manta's role in Injustice 2 will be, however, as the game takes place in an alternate universe in which Aquaman has sided with the villains and Black Manta is slotted in on the hero side of the fighter-selection screen.

In terms of fighting style, he seems to be a mid-range fighter with some hovering abilities that can be used to mess up timing of an opponent's attacks. He fights with knives and rockets and his super move uses a fighting staff, which transforms into a trident, and a grapple gun.

His character will be made available in early September for those who have bought Fighter Pack 2 or the Ultimate Edition. For everyone else, hopefully he will be offered as a playable teaser in a Multiverse event, as has been done with Sub-Zero and Starfire previously, to give gamers a chance to test his gameplay style and try out his special moves and super move.

Finally, South African gamers who haven't bought the base Injustice 2 game yet can take advantage of a great deal that is running until 3 September 2017. The game is being offered at R599.99 (a discount of R300) for both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One at a number of retailers, including AWX, BT Games, CNA, Dion Wired, Game, Game 4 U, Makro, Musica, Raru and Takealot. At, of course, we recommend you get it at Raru as we have an affiliate relationship with the site and your purchase helps to fund the running of The base game does not include Fighter Packs 1 or 2, as those have to be bought and downloaded through the PlayStation Network or Xbox Live Marketplace, but it'll give you a good start - and there's also lots of content for non-competitive gamers and for gamers who prefer a single-player experience. You don't have to be an e-sports aficionado to enjoy this game.
