The second volume of YouNeek Studio's epic historical fantasy featuring an African sword-wielding female protagonist is halfway through production and seeking funding from fans to cover the printing costs.

Here's some very exciting African comics news for a change. Roy Okupe, the Nigerian co-founder of Washington, DC, based YouNeek Studios and the creator/writer of E.X.O. - The Legend Of Wade Williams and Malika - Warrior Queen, has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the printing of the second Malika - Warrior Queen graphic novel.

The first graphic novel was launched in May and the first chapter was printed as one of this year's Free Comic Book Day offerings. (You may have seen me sneak it into my DC Lil Bombshells Wonder Woman 75 FCBD Vinyl Figure unboxing video for airwavez.) The team is now working on this second volume, which has a June 2018 launch date (although it will be made available to Kickstarter backers earlier, in March 2018). The production costs have been covered, the book is already half complete, and the campaign's purpose is to fund the printing costs for at least 1000 books.

Malika - Warrior Queen is a historical-fantasy series set in West Africa in the 15th century. Okupe has painstakingly researched African history to ensure that the fiction is framed by fact. Consequently, Malika is based on a real African warrior queen, Amina of Zazzau. The story explores how Malika unites and expands the empire of Azzaz, which then comes under threat due to rebelliousness within the empire as well as externally when another empire begins to encroach on African territories.

The Malika - Warrior Queen Part 2 Kickstarter campaign is, in fact, Okupe's fourth crowdfunding project. The previous three campaigns were successful and financed the printing of the first two volumes of E.X.O. - The Legend Of Wade Williams and the first volume of Malika - Warrior Queen.

E.X.O. - The Legend Of Wade Williams is a science fiction superhero comic set in 2025 in Africa and is part of Okupe's YouNeek YouNiverse, as is Malika - Warrior Queen. The universe is an expanding collection of interlinked characters and stories with future projects, heading well past 2019, that will include science fantasy and steampunk themes.

In you are really quick (as in: within the next couple of hours) you can get in on a great early bird deal that will be particularly cost-effective for South African and African supporters.

Okupe is offering PDFs of all his graphic novels - both volumes of Malika: Warrior Queen, both volumes of E.X.O.: The Legend Of Wade Williams, and his companion art book WindMaker: The History Of Atala - for US$20. The shipping cost to South Africa for just one graphic novel is US$22, making it very prohibitive, so this is an opportunity to own all the content from the YouNeek YouNiverse at a really great price, if you can stomach not being able to own a physical copy of the books. It's going to be a tough decision for some people (it was for me) but the postage costs are a killer, especially with the exchange rate being so weak at the moment.

If you're in the US you have much better options as shipping is free because YouNeek Studios is based in the country. Other tiers include physical copies of this and the other YouNeek YouNiverse books, a signed poster, superhero T-shirts, the ability to place an advertisement in the new book, and customised Funko Pop figures in the likenesses of Malika, WindMaker, Fury, and E.X.O..

At the time of posting this news story the campaign is already 65% funded by over 120 backers (in less than 48 hours) and is sure to surpass the 100% goal and head to stretch goals very soon. If you need a few days to think about it, however, you have until Monday, 20 November 2017 at 03:00 (SAST/CAT/GMT+2) to contribute to the campaign.
