News: Walking Dead Day Celebrates 15 Years Of The Walking Dead
The Walking Dead (the comic) turns 15 this year - the first issue was published in October 2003 - and that means a celebration with all sorts of collectibles for fans of the series. Many comic stores around the world will also be taking part in the event, including Cosmic Comics in South Africa.
Skybound Entertainment, the imprint of Image Comics that publishes The Walking Dead
, has designated Saturday, 13 October 2018, as "Walking Dead Day" in order to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the first issue of the series, which was created by and written by Robert Kirkman, with interior art and a cover by Tony Moore.
The day is being celebrated at comic shops around the world, although, in South Africa, the only store that I expect to be doing so is Cosmic Comics

Two special publications, as well as themed merchandise, such as a button, a bookmark, and a walker mask, will be available at those participating stores on Walking Dead Day.
The first publication is a free comic - The Walking Dead Day Special
- comprising four short stories that focus on the characters Michonne, The Governor, Morgan, and Tyrese and delve into who they were before the zombie apocalypse occurred.
The second is a purchasable reissue of The Walking Dead #1
(officially called The Walking Dead #1 15th Anniversary Variant Edition
) with new cover art by the series' comic artist Charlie Adlard, who has been the interior artist since Issue #7, and colours by Dave Stewart.

Several participating comic shops will be offering a special variant of the reissued comic, which shows protagonist Rick Grimes standing in front of a comic shop with Skybound titles littering the pavement, and this variant will have their shop logo replicated in the art.
Cosmic Comics is, unfortunately, listed as the only African comic book store
that's offering a branded cover - I'm disappointed that Readers Den Comic Shop in Cape Town isn't taking part, of course. Cosmic Comics is selling its variant for R150
and it only has a few copies so you'll have to be quick sbut, unfortunately, if you aren't in Johannesburg and can pick up one from the store (or can send a friend) you'll have to pay an extra R130 for shipping.

Walking Dead Day also sees the release of the 15th anniversary box set
[Diamond Code APR188923, US$200], which comprises The Walking Dead Compendium One
, The Walking Dead Compendium Two
, and The Walking Dead Compendium Three
, all with new covers, as well as a paperback edition of the Here's Negan
hardcover that's been updated with the back stories of Michonne, The Governor, Tyrese, and Morgan.
The three compendiums collect the first 144 issues of the series, which features Tony Moore's art in the first six issues and Charlie Adlard's work in the rest. Adlard's art also adorns the box.
There's more. Skybound Entertainment also commissioned some iconic comic artists
, including J Scott Campbell, David Finch, Declan Shalvey, Emma Rios, Sana Takeda, and Jen Bartel to create new covers for some of the series' most notable issues. Fifteen issues are available, all of which are in blind bags so the reveal of the cover art will only happen on Walking Dead Day. The blind bags also allow Skybound Entertainment to add some spice to the surprise as multiple versions of each artwork have been produced: there may be a coloured version, a sketch version, a virgin version (in which there's just the art and no titles or other text on the cover), or "something else entirely".
