The annual Global Game Jam is taking place this coming weekend and four cities in South Africa - Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, and Pretoria - have sites where the jamming will be taking place.

Global Game Jam is one of a number of international game jams that encourages game developers and game-development enthusiasts to create a game within a limited timeframe usually under a mystery theme that is only revealed once the game jam starts.

Global Game Jam runs over a weekend and offers a 48-hour timeframe in which teaming up at a central hub is one of the prerequisites (other game jams allow for solo projects and people working from home). One of its aims is to encourage people with little to no experience, but the will to participate and learn game development, to join in and make a game with more experienced developers.

A number of international Global Game Jam games have gone on to be developed further after the jam is over, subsequently becoming indie successes, although the aim of this particular jam is not necessarily to finish but to learn from the experience, which is why it's a particularly friendly environment for beginners.

Therefore, if you're a beginner with a limited skillset over the age of 18 you should consider taking part because the team you're in will figure out a way to utilise your abilities and knowledge and you'll learn a lot in the process. This is especially important if you're considering studying game design or a related course as this will give you a good taste of what it's like to make a game, and you'll make some industry contacts in the process.

The jam sites for South Africa are:

If you wish to participate you need to register on the Global Game Jam web site, as well as for the particular jam site where you will be attending the event. This is to allow for game submissions at the end of the jam and for the venue and local organisers to keep track of the participants.

The 2019 Global Game Jam runs from 18:00 on Friday, 25 January 2019, to between 18:00 and 20:00 (site dependent) on Sunday, 27 January 2019.
