News: Call For Submissions (Comics/Art): An Opportunity For South Africans To Showcase Their Work in IDW Publishing's Full Bleed

It's a very tight call for submissions, with a deadline this Friday, but South Africans are invited to submit their best comic and pop-culture art to ICON Comics & Games Convention for a chance to be featured in an upcoming issue of IDW Publishing's arts-and-culture magazine.

ICON Comics & Games Convention is running an art competition, in collaboration with IDW Publishing in the USA, that will give South African comics artists the opportunity to showcase their work in IDW Publishing's Full Bleed. Full Bleed, which launched in 2018, is a 200-page hardcover "magazine" that focuses on comics, arts, and culture from around the world and is curated and edited by IDW Publishing Portland's creative director Dirk Wood and IDW Publishing co-founder and former CEO Ted Adams. It offers an ad-free artisanal take on the arts (it is produced in Portland, Oregon, after all) and is therefore not available digitally - the coffee-table-worthy print editions are the only option.

The competition is looking for submissions of comic-book and pop-culture art from South Africans and residents of South Africa (the qualifier is that you must have a South African ID number) who are over the age of 18. Entrants can be amateurs or professionals as the winners will be judged solely on the artistic merit of the pieces, not on the entrants' industry experience. Entrants can submit up to five pieces that have never previously been sold but a person can only be selected for the curation round on the basis of one piece of art.

The submissions will be curated by an as yet unnamed judge who is not affiliated with ICON Comics & Games Convention and they will be judged anonymously based on merit. That curated selection will then be judged by Dirk Wood live via video conference from the USA at this year's ICON Comics & Games Convention in Johannesburg on Saturday, 20 April 2019. He and IDW Publishing will determine if the quality of entries meets the requirements for the magazine and, if so, will select the pieces that will fill a multi-page spread that will appear in a future issue of Full Bleed

Entries need to be submitted via a submission portal, which, unfortunately, requires a Google Account to log in. The submission window closes at 23:59 on Friday, 12 April 2019.
