Comics writer Jamie Me is running a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter to fund the printing of the first two issues of his comic Start Again
, a "superhero boy meets girl story". He is the creator, writer, letterer, and designer, while the art is by Toni Doya from Spain, the colours are by Sean Callahan in the USA, and the editor is Archie Dait from the UK, who is also one of Jamie Me's frequent collaborators (which includes building the #ComicBookHour
community on Twitter
The Start Again
story is set, as Jamie Me says, in his "local area of West Yorkshire" in the UK and is inspired by his "difficulties with OCD and anxiety". As such this is very much an adult comic (consequently the Kickstarter campaign page
is NSFW) that features very explicit language and nudity, as well as characters who deal with serious issues, such as mental health challenges and the negative effects of social media.
The story begins with superhero Jump getting caught - fully exposed (and I just don't mean his identity) - on camera and after social media goes berserk and the government suspends him he falls into a deep depression. In trying to climb out of the hole and function normally again he has to join the real world but with his identity no longer a secret it becomes very difficult just to exist without being stalked by paparazzi (and, I'm guessing, wannabe YouTube stars and influencers), while the media looks for any sensationist angle that it can find to keep the story in the news cycle.
In the mix is a woman with whom he had a fling who, amidst all the chaos, seems to be his only public supporter but with all the drama - and extra complications that unfold as the story progresses - will it actually be possible for him to have a proper relationship with her?
The first issue of Start Again
was initially printed in early 2016 after a successful Kickstarter campaign
and was then reissued with bonus content via another campaign
before being digitally remastered with a better brand identity and completely redone lettering last year (via, you guessed it, a third campaign
) so the fan base that has grown due to all these crowdfunding initiatives will finally be able to read the second issue in the series, and new fans will be able to start from the beginning with, if they wish, a print copy of the remastered version.
In less than a day the (current) campaign reached its funding goal and, with just over two weeks to go, it is now well into stretch goals. Backer rewards at different tiers include digital (PDF) copies of the comics, printed copies, and copies of other comics projects that Jamie Me has written or contributed to. Stretch goal perks include digital and A4 printed copies of character concept designs (depending on the backer tier), as well as a secret goal that is about to be unlocked.
The Start Again
crowdfunding campaign runs until Thursday, 25 April 2019, at 21:00 UTC (23:00 SAST/CAT/UTC+2 and 13:00 PDT/UTC-7). You can pledge here
