The Walt Disney Company Africa has reported that Avengers: Endgame
, the concluding film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's 22-film series that's been dubbed The Infinity Saga, has become the second film in history to pass the R100 million mark in South African box office sales.
The milestone was achieved over the reporting weekend of 14 to 16 June 2019, with the seven weeks of cumulative ticket sales closing at R100 511 543 on Sunday evening and the film ranking in seventh for the weekend behind such films as the new live-action Aladdin
movie (first), which was released on Friday, 24 May 2019 and is still topping the box office locally, and Men In Black: International
(second), which was released on Friday, 14 June 2019.
was the first film to achieve the R100 million mark, in early 2018.

, which opened in South Africa on 26 April 2019, set a number of records at the local box office within a few days of its debut: the biggest industry opening weekend (R34 million for the weekend comprising 26 to 28 April 2019), the biggest opening day (Friday, 26 April 2019, with R9.2 million) and the biggest single day (Saturday, 27 April 2019, with R11.8 million).
Other local milestones it reached on that weekend included being the biggest ever opening weekend for any superhero movie from any studio, the biggest opening weekend for a Marvel Studios movie, and the biggest opening weekend for a Disney movie. It also became the film that, so far, has reached the R30 million mark the fastest.
Marvel Studios movies now hold the top three positions for all time box office sales in South Africa. First is Black Panther
, though it's possible it will be surpassed by Avengers: Endgame
, which is presently in second place and is still in cinemas, and third is Avengers: Infinity War
, which was released in April 2018, a few months after Black Panther
