The Chickening Is Everything Deadpool Isn't

Deadpool fans hoping for a humour-infused surreal experience will be disappointed with the new film, which opens tomorrow, but cheer yourself up with The Chickening, a reworking of The Shining that's dipped in saucy, NSFW poultry.

The Chickening Is Everything Deadpool Isn't

The Chickening is a pseudo trailer for a fictional film that is an absurdist remix of The Shining. In this version Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) takes a job as the senior chief night manager of Charbay's Chicken World And Restaurant Resort, a fast-food entertainment complex that's situated on top of a volcano. The resort is experimenting with a new condiment, a volcanically activated, extreme dipping sauce called "The Shiny", which Jack tries, with disastrous results. His son Danny (Danny Lloyd and Cad Gold Jr) teams up with Scatmok (Scatman Crothers), a hyper-dimensional alien, to destroy the source of the sauce, prevent the entertainment complex from blowing up, and save his father.

The short, which is free to watch (see below), is by film-makers Nick DenBoer and Davy Force, who are both visual effects and remix artists who dub their style "cinegraffiti". It was first released in September 2015 and then premiered at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival in October. This year it was an official selection at Sundance Film Festival, with four screenings.

There is so much packed into each frame that you'll need to watch it a few times to catch all the Easter eggs and jokes. (I'd also recommend watching at least once without the sound and listening at least once without viewing it.)

One of the highlights is the catchy dance hit "Come Play With Us Danny" by Nick DenBoer. It's unfortunately an unfinished track but it's available to stream on Soundcloud or you can download the MP3 from Google Drive for free (no login required).

The Chickening is what Deadpool should have been - the surrealism is superb and is a great example of how it is possible to incorporate bizarre themes and non sequiturs without alienating the audience - and it's free.

You can watch it below (please note it's NSFW). You'll never look at chicken the same way again.
