• When: November 2018 until 18 March 2019
• What: The 2019 Creators For Creators grant, which is worth US$30 000, is open for submissions. Comic creators from anywhere in the world are invited to apply if they have a project that they would like to kick-start.

South AfricaExhibition: Still Here Tomorrow To High Five You Yesterday, Cape Town
• When: Wednesday, 20 January 2019, to Sunday, 30 June 2019; 10:00 to 18:00 daily
• Where: Temporary Exhibition Galleries, Level 4, ORMS And Tropen Museum, Zeitz MOCAA, Silo District, V&A Waterfront, Cape Town, South Africa
• What: Zeitz MOCAA's group exhibition Still Here Tomorrow To High Five You Yesterday features a mural by Kwezi's Loyiso Mkize.

• When: Friday, 1 February 2019 to Sunday, 31 March 2019
• What: Stephen Spinas is running a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo for his 30-page comic Em Is For Monsters.

South AfricaExhibition: Loyiso Mkize's EXDS, Cape Town
• When: Thursday, 7 February 2019, 18:00 to 21:00 (opening night); Friday, 15 February 2019, 09:30 to late (live painting event); weekdays: 09:30 to 17:00; Saturdays: 09:30 to 13:30; exhibition closes around mid March
• Where: Eclectica Contemporary, 69 Burg Street, Cape Town, South Africa
• What: A solo exhibition featuring fine art by Kwezi's Loyiso Mkize is opening at Eclectica Contemporary in Cape Town during the city's February First Thursdays event. Mkize will be in attendance at the opening and the art will be for sale through the gallery. He will also be at the gallery on 15 February 2019 for the whole day as he works on his exhibition pieces, which are ongoing arts projects.

South AfricaExhibition: Dan Perjovschi, Cape Town
• When: Wednesday, 13 February 2019, from 17:00 (opening night); Friday, 15 February 2019, from 18:00 (public talk); exhibition closes 9 May 2019
• Where: A4 Arts Foundation, 23 Buitenkant Street, Cape Town, South Africa
• What: A solo exhibition, The Black & White Cape Town Report, featuring art by Romanian artist and cartoonist Dan Perjovschi is opening at the A4 Arts Foundation in Cape Town. Perjovschi is known for creating cartoons in the exhibition spaces, either just live for the visitors to see or directly on display surfaces such as walls. For the Cape Town exhibition he has taken over the entire first floor space in the A4 Arts Foundation building and has drawn cartoons with political commentary on all the walls.

• When: Wednesday, 13 February 2019, from 17:30 (opening night); Thursday, 14 February 2019, to Saturday, 27 April 2019; open 24 hours a day (there is 24 hour security and the exhibition space is safe)
• Where: Open 24 Hrs, The Harrington, 50 Harrington Street, Cape Town, South Africa
• What: The exhibition Hero features a singular work by artist Ed Young of a very lifelike Superman that's a comment on being a "hero".

WorldwideCrowdfunding: Bal-Oog & Brommel Volume 2, Worldwide
• When: Saturday, 16 February 2019 to Monday, 18 March 2019
• What: The Bal-Oog & Brommel team is running a crowdfunding campaign on Thundafund to cover the production and printing costs of the second graphic novel in the series.

South AfricaFestival: Woordfees 2019, Stellenbosch
• When: Friday, 1 March 2019, to Sunday, 10 March 2019
• Where: Various venues around Stellenbosch and Stellenbosch University/Victoria Street, Stellenbosch, South Africa
• What: The programme for the 2019 Woodfees festival, which is hosted in various venues in and around Stellenbosch by Stellenbosch University, features a number of South African comics related events, including a presentation by Zapiro and three performances of Bal-Oog & Brommel: Moord In Ixiastraat.

South AfricaArt Meetup: Open Art Sketch Meet, Cape Town
• When: Saturday, 2 March 2019, 11:00 to 14:00
• Where: The Drawing Room, 87 Station Road, Observatory, Cape Town, South Africa
• What: Open Art Cape Town is holding one of its regular Sketch Meetups at its usual Saturday morning venue, The Drawing Room, a café and art gallery in Observatory. While it's not specifically a South African comics event it is organised by local comics creators and you can always find some of them in attendance.

South AfricaFestival: First Thursdays Warm Up With Jean De Wet, Cape Town
• When: Thursday, 18:00 to 21:00 (Jean de Wet's DJ set; entire event ends at 00:00)
• Where: The Gin Bar, 64A Wale Street (go through the Honest Chocolate entrance to the back), Cape Town, South Africa
• What: Fine artist and prolific zine creator Jean de Wet is playing a DJ set at The Gin Bar as part of the March 2019 First Thursdays Warm Up event in Cape Town. His work will also be on exhibition at the venue.

South AfricaConvention: Cape Town International Animation Festival 2019
• When: Friday, 8 March 2019, 10:00 to 21:30; Saturday, 9 March 2019, 10:00 to 21:30; Sunday, 10 March 2019, 10:00 to 16:45
• Where: The River Club, corner of Liesbeek Parkway and Observatory Road, Observatory, Cape Town, South Africa
• What: Although the 2019 Cape Town International Animation Festival is, of course, an animation event two artists that have worked on South African comics - Ben Winfield and Caroline Vos - are appearing on the programme on the Saturday.

• When: Fox Junction Event Venue, 1 Fox Precinct, 14 Alexander Street, Ferreirasdorp, Johannesburg, South Africa
• What: Shameema Dharsey is launching the third volume of her Asmaul Husna colouring book series, The Asmaul Husna: The 99 Names Of Allah Volume 3 Wondrous Nature, at the sixth HalaalGoodsMarket in Johannesburg, where her comics and other colouring books will also be available for purchase.

South AfricaFestival: Japan Day 2019 Rugby Edition, Stellenbosch
• When: Saturday, 16 March 2019, 09:00 to 15:00
• Where: Oude Libertas Slow Market, Oude Libertas, Oude Libertas Road (off the R310), Stellenbosch, South Africa
• What: The Office Of The Consul Of Japan in Cape Town is hosting the seventh annual Japan Day at Oude Libertas Slow Market in Stellenbosch. Readers Den Comic Shop will have a stand at the event (likely selling manga and figurines).

South AfricaConvention: UCON 2019, Cape Town
• When: Saturday, 16 March 2019, to Sunday, 17 March 2019; 10:00 to 18:00 daily
• Where: SunExhibits, GrandWest Casino & Entertainment World, 1 Jakes Gerwel Drive, Goodwood, Cape Town, South Africa
• What: In 2019 UCON, the anime, manga, comics, gaming, and pop-culture convention organised by the University Of Cape Town's Genshiken society will be partnering with ACGL's Afresports e-sports event to form a mega convention at GrandWest.

South AfricaConvention: ComicEx Cape Town 2019
• When: Saturday, 23 March 2019, to Sunday, 24 March 2019; 10:30 to 18:30 daily
• Where: SunExhibits, GrandWest Casino & Entertainment World, 1 Jakes Gerwel Drive, Goodwood, Cape Town, South Africa
• What: The second ComicEx Cape Town will once again be taking place at GrandWest Casino & Entertainment World in Goodwood. Very little information is available on the event, which has also been hosted in Johannesburg and Durban, but apparently it will feature "gaming, cosplay, tech, music, comic books and figurines, artist alley, dance, magicians, hypnotists, photo booths, comedians, snow dome, popup movies, Nerf Gun Battle Zone, merch stalls, VR, live entertainment, pinball machines, climbing walls, surf simulator, gladiator jousting podiums, bumper rides, competitions and giveaways, and so much more."

April 2019


South AfricaConvention: ICON 2019, Johannesburg
• When: Friday, 20 April 2019, to Sunday, 22 April 2019
• Where: Emperor's Palace, Johannesburg, South Africa
• What: ICON, the country's first comics, gaming, and geek-culture convention, which is now in its 27th year, will be taking place in Johannesburg in April.

South AfricaConvention: FanCon Cape Town Comic Con 2019
• When: Saturday, 27 April 2019, to Sunday, 28 April 2019
• Where: CTICC (Cape Town International Convention Centre) Hall 8 and 9 (CTICC 2 building), corner of Heerengracht and Rua Bartholomeu Dias, Foreshore, Cape Town, South Africa
• What: The fourth annual FanCon Cape Town Comic Con will be taking place in the new CITCC building. International cosplayer Ani-Mia was the first guest to be announced. Subsequent announcements have included Sean Izaakse, Jason Masters, and Sana Takeda. Local cosplay events are already being organised and exhibitor-stand applications are open.

WorldwideFestival: Free Comic Book Day 2019, Worldwide
• When: Saturday, 4 May 2019
• What: During the annual Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) event comics fans can get free comics specially printed for the day from their local comics shop. In South Africa Readers Den Comic Shop in Cape Town and Cosmic Comics in Johannesburg historically celebrate the event with free comics and discounts. In 2019 Free Comic Book Day coincides with Star Wars Day (May The Fourth).

South AfricaConvention: Comic Con Africa 2019, Johannesburg
• When: Saturday, 21 September 2019, to Tuesday, 24 September 2019
• Where: Gallagher Convention Centre, Midrand, Johannesburg, South Africa
• What: Comic Con Africa is expanding to four days, including the Heritage Day public holiday, to accommodate more fans in 2019.

South AfricaExpo: rAge Expo 2019, Johannesburg
• When: Friday, 27 September 2019 to Sunday, 29 October 2018
• Where: The Dome, corner of Olievenhout Avenue and Northumberland Road, North Riding, Johannesburg, South Africa
• What: Historically a few South African comics creators appear in the Artist Alley at rAge, which focuses on video gaming, computer, technology, e-sports, and geek culture.

WorldwideEvent: Inktober 2019, Worldwide
• When: Tuesday, 1 October 2019, to Thursday, 31 October 2019
• What: The annual Inktober art event, which was begun by US artist Jake Parker in 2009, begins, as always, on 1 October. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the initiative. Participants are encouraged to create a drawing or doodle a day, in ink, for the course of the month and post it online on social media.

WorldwideFestival: Halloween ComicFest 2019
• When: Saturday, 26 October 2019
• What: Halloween ComicFest is an annual comics event, similar to Free Comic Book Day, in which comic shops all over the world celebrate Halloween by giving free horror-themed comic books to customers. Historically Readers Den Comic Shop in Cape Town and Cosmic Comics in Johannesburg participate in the event.
