• What: Awali Comics and Ziyaad Rahman are running a crowdfunding campaign to print the first volume of Siri Watu: Descendants Of Africa.

UKExhibition: Kind Girls, Evil Sisters & Wicked Witches: Women In Fairy Tales, Nottingham
• When: Saturday, 20 July 2019 to Sunday, 3 November 2019; 09:00 to 17:00 daily
• Where: National Justice Museum, High Pavement, Nottingham, NG1 1HN, UK
• What: Sally Jane Thompson, in collaboration with students from Robert Mellors Academy in the UK, has created a comic for the exhibition Kind Girls, Evil Sisters & Wicked Witches: Women In Fairy Tales, a free exhibition at the National Justice Museum in Nottingham in the UK that "explores and challenges gender stereotypes that lie in five key fairy tales: Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Hansel & Gretel, Cinderella, and Snow White".

South AfricaFestival: Midlands Literary Festival, Howick
• When: Saturday, 31 August 2019, 09:00 to 17:00, and Sunday, 1 September 2019, 09:00 to 17:00
• Where: Fern Hill Hotel, R103, Howick, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
• What: Luke Molver, the creator behind Story Press Africa's Shaka Rising and King Shaka: Zulu Legend, is on the Midlands Literary Festival programme along with his publisher, Jessica Powers. They are part of a panel discussion, along with Hannes Barnard and in conversation with Izak de Vries, on the topic of representing Africa and will be launching King Shaka: Zulu Legend during the talk.

South AfricaFestival: Open Book Comics Fest 2019, Cape Town
• When: Wednesday, 4 September 2019, to Sunday, 8 September 2019, 10:00 to 21:00 (Wednesday to Saturday), 10:00 to 16:00 (Sunday)
• Where: Various venues near The District 6 Homecoming Centre, Caledon Street, Cape Town, South Africa
• What: The festival will comprise workshops, panel discussions, and more, with most of the events happening on 7 and 8 September 2019.

South AfricaFestival: South African Book Fair, Johannesburg
• When: Friday, 6 September 2019, to Sunday, 8 September 2019, 10:00 to 17:00 (Friday and Saturday), 10:00 to 15:30 (Sunday)
• Where: Women's Jail, Constitution Hill, Joubert Street, Johannesburg, South Africa
• What: The festival features Loyiso Mkhize, Clyde Beech, Nathi Ngubane, and Jessica Powers, the publisher of the Shaka series.

South AfricaArt Meetup: Open Art Sketch Meet, Cape Town
• When: Saturday, 7 September 2019, 11:00 to 14:00
• Where: The Drawing Room, 87 Station Road, Observatory, Cape Town, South Africa
• What: Open Art Cape Town is holding one of its regular Sketch Meetups at its usual Saturday morning venue, The Drawing Room, a café and art gallery in Observatory. While it's not specifically a South African comics event it is organised by local comics creators and you can always find some of them in attendance.

South AfricaExhibition: The Art Of Comics: French Bandes Dessinées And South African Comics In Conversation, Johannesburg
• When: Thursday, 19 September 2019, to Sunday, 17 November 2019
• Where: Johannesburg Art Gallery (JAG), corner of Klein Street and King George Street, Joubert Park, Johannesburg, South Africa
• What: The Art Of Comics: French Bandes Dessinées And South African Comics In Conversation is an exciting new exhibition that showcases the fascinating worlds of South African comics and French bandes dessinées, the famous French comic style.

WorldwideFestival: Batman Day 2019
• When: Saturday, 21 September 2019
• What: DC Comics is celebrating the 80th anniversary of Batman in 2019, with 21 September designated as Batman Day. Readers Den Comic Shop in Cape Town has confirmed that it will be taking part and Cosmic Comics in Johannesburg is likely to participate in the event, which also coincides with Comic Con Africa.

South AfricaConvention: Comic Con Africa 2019, Johannesburg
• When: Saturday, 21 September 2019, to Tuesday, 24 September 2019
• Where: Gallagher Convention Centre, Midrand, Johannesburg, South Africa
• What: Comic Con Africa is expanding to four days, including the Heritage Day public holiday, to accommodate more fans in 2019.

South AfricaSale: Bargain Books Warehouse Book Sale, Cape Town
• When: Tuesday, 24 September 2019, 09:00 to 17:00
• Where: Bargain Books Warehouse, 10 Mymoena Crescent, Primrose Park, Cape Town, South Africa
• What: Bargain Books in Cape Town is hosting a clearance sale at its warehouse in Athlone, which includes picture books and trade paperbacks. As is usual with these sales, it's unclear as to which titles will be on sale and you'll only find out when you get there.

South AfricaExpo: rAge Expo 2019, Johannesburg
• When: Friday, 27 September 2019 to Sunday, 29 September 2019
• Where: The Dome, corner of Olievenhout Avenue and Northumberland Road, North Riding, Johannesburg, South Africa
• What: Historically a few South African comics creators appear in the Artist Alley at rAge, which focuses on video gaming, computer, technology, e-sports, and geek culture.

October 2019


WorldwideEvent: Inktober 2019, Worldwide
• When: Tuesday, 1 October 2019, to Thursday, 31 October 2019
• What: The annual Inktober art event, which was begun by US artist Jake Parker in 2009, begins, as always, on 1 October. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the initiative. Participants are encouraged to create a drawing or doodle a day, in ink, for the course of the month and post it online on social media.

WorldwideFestival: 24-Hour Comics Day 2019
• When: Saturday, 5 October 2019
• What: The annual 24-Hour Comics Day event challenges comics creators, and aspiring comics creators, to make a comic or zine in 24 hours.

WorldwideFestival: Halloween ComicFest 2019
• When: Saturday, 26 October 2019
• What: Halloween ComicFest is an annual comics event, similar to Free Comic Book Day, in which comic shops all over the world celebrate Halloween by giving free horror-themed comic books to customers. Historically Readers Den Comic Shop in Cape Town and Cosmic Comics in Johannesburg participate in the event.
