• What: During his time on Fleur De Passion Kannemeyer produced a few cartoons and works of art, facsimiles of which are on exhibition as past of The Ocean Mapping Expedition's Our Spice Islands exhibition, which collects the art and cartoons produced by artists from around the world who have spent time on the boat.

• Where: Eclectica Contemporary, 69 Burg Street, Cape Town, South Africa
• What: A solo exhibition featuring fine art by Kwezi's Loyiso Mkize is opening at Eclectica Contemporary in Cape Town during the city's February First Thursdays event. Mkize will be in attendance at the opening and the art will be for sale through the gallery. He will also be at the gallery on 15 February 2019 for the whole day as he works on his exhibition pieces, which are ongoing arts projects.

• When: Wednesday, 13 February 2019, from 17:00 (opening night); Friday, 15 February 2019, from 18:00 (public talk); exhibition closes 9 May 2019
• Where: A4 Arts Foundation, 23 Buitenkant Street, Cape Town, South Africa
• What: A solo exhibition, The Black & White Cape Town Report, featuring art by Romanian artist and cartoonist Dan Perjovschi is opening at the A4 Arts Foundation in Cape Town. Perjovschi is known for creating cartoons in the exhibition spaces, either just live for the visitors to see or directly on display surfaces such as walls. For the Cape Town exhibition he has taken over the entire first floor space in the A4 Arts Foundation building and has drawn cartoons with political commentary on all the walls.

• Where: Open 24 Hrs, The Harrington, 50 Harrington Street, Cape Town, South Africa
• What: The exhibition Hero features a singular work by artist Ed Young of a very lifelike Superman that's a comment on being a "hero".

• When: Saturday, 16 February 2019, 13:30 to 15:30
• Where: Exclusive Books, Sandton City, 5th Street, Sandton, Johannesburg, South Africa
• What: Kwezi writer Mohale Mashigo's debut novel will be the featured book at Literary Alliance's February #BookClubSaturday event, which will be taking place at Exclusive Books in Sandton City in Johannesburg. The intention of the event is for fans to gather to discuss the book. Mashigo is not officially part of the programme but she has hinted that if she is available and in the city she may attend to hear the discussion and meet some of her readers.

• What: The Bal-Oog & Brommel team is running a crowdfunding campaign on Thundafund to cover the production and printing costs of the second graphic novel in the series.

• Where: Various venues around Stellenbosch and Stellenbosch University/Victoria Street, Stellenbosch, South Africa
• What: The programme for the 2019 Woodfees festival, which is hosted in various venues in and around Stellenbosch by Stellenbosch University, features a number of South African comics related events, including a presentation by Zapiro and three performances of Bal-Oog En Brommel: Moord In Ixiastraat.

• What: Fine artist and prolific zine creator Jean de Wet is playing a DJ set at The Gin Bar as part of the March 2019 First Thursdays Warm Up event in Cape Town. His work will also be on exhibition at the venue.

• What: Although the 2019 Cape Town International Animation Festival is, of course, an animation event two artists that have worked on South African comics - Ben Winfield and Caroline Vos - are appearing on the programme on the Saturday.

• What: Saturday, 23 March 2019 has been designated Hellboy Day, in honour of the 25th anniversary of comic creator Mike Mignola's Hellboy, which is being celebrated at comic book stores worldwide. In South Africa both Readers Den Comic Shop stores will be celebrating the day by offering a free special-edition comic, double-sided poster, button badge, and bookmark with every purchase over R100.

• Where: SunExhibits, GrandWest Casino & Entertainment World, 1 Jakes Gerwel Drive, Goodwood, Cape Town, South Africa
• What: The second ComicEx Cape Town will once again be taking place at GrandWest Casino & Entertainment World in Goodwood. Very little information is available on the event, which has also been hosted in Johannesburg and Durban, but apparently it will feature "gaming, cosplay, tech, music, comic books and figurines, artist alley, dance, magicians, hypnotists, photo booths, comedians, snow dome, popup movies, Nerf Gun Battle Zone, merch stalls, VR, live entertainment, pinball machines, climbing walls, surf simulator, gladiator jousting podiums, bumper rides, competitions and giveaways, and so much more."

International guest Dirk Wood, the creative director of IDW Publishing, will be judging entries in the Full Bleed comics competition live from the USA.

• When: Saturday, 4 May 2019
• What: During the annual Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) event comics fans can get free comics specially printed for the day from their local comics shop. In South Africa Readers Den Comic Shop in Cape Town; Cosmic Comics, Smallville Comics, Heroes Of Games & Comics, and Comic Warehouse in Johannesburg; and Project Mayhem Collectibles & Action Figures in Durban will be celebrating the event with free comics and discounts and, at some locations, cosplay events. In 2019 Free Comic Book Day coincides with Star Wars Day (May The Fourth).
